Redondo Beach

Also known as: Redondo

Redondo has good facilities, an easy beach or stair entry and suits most tides, and the Highline College MaST Center aquarium sits on a pier in the middle of the site. A shallow line north of the aquarium passes an old VW Beetle, rock piles and PVC swim-throughs, while the deep line leads past a statue and an old observation pipe to the Carousel boat at the head of a trough. South of the boat ramp, an area divers call Lumpy Land is one of the best places to find Pacific spiny lumpsuckers, and a bottle field further out is popular with photographers. Des Moines has been called the sixgill capital, and bluntnose sixgill sharks are sometimes seen in the trough at the right time of year. On large ebbs short bursts of current, known locally as the Redondo River, can appear.
