Orange Beach

Also known as: Peleliu Coral Garden

Orange Beach, also called Peleliu Coral Garden, lies off the west coast of Peleliu north of the harbour and was the main landing beach of the US invasion on 15 September 1944. The coral garden starts just below the surface, reaches the reef edge at about 18 m and then drops to a sandy plateau at about 23 m. Anchors, pipes, hoses, landing craft remains, aircraft parts and old ammunition lie among large coral heads; ammunition must not be touched. Marble rays, crocodilefish, cuttlefish, turtles and schools of bumphead parrotfish are seen regularly, and sharks, barracuda and tuna can appear at the edge. The reef is large enough that one dive cannot cover it.
