Zvir

Also known as: Svir

The Zvir was a steel steamer carrying sugar from Java when it ran aground on Ningaloo Reef in November 1902; the crew survived and walked to Carnarvon. The wreck lies in a sanctuary zone off Norwegian Bay at around 10 m, with the bow facing the open sea. Large coral bommies full of fish surround the site, and divers can follow deck plating and winches to the two-cylinder steam engine, three boilers and a spare propeller. A long propeller shaft leads to the upright rudder and four-bladed propeller at the stern. It is only dived when the swell is low.
