Benan
Also known as: Benan Shipwreck
The Benan was a iron barque of about 1,400 tons carrying coal when currents pushed it onto the reef near Point Cloates in December 1888; the crew survived. The wreck lies almost starboard side to the reef with the bow to the north, about 3 m deep at the bow and 8 m at the rudder. Anchors, mast sections, machinery and portholes fused to the reef lie among the twisted remains. The site usually sits under the breakers, so it needs swell below about half a metre. It is protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act, so nothing may be touched or removed.
