Scoglio del Vervece
Also known as: Vervece Rock · Vervece
The Vervece rock is the core of one of the two integral reserve zones of the Punta Campanella marine park, and its distance from the coast keeps the water clear even when the sea is rough. A bronze statue of the Madonna rests on a ledge on the east side at 12 m and is the goal of an underwater procession every September in memory of those lost at sea. The north face holds a garden of red gorgonians where John Dory and large scorpionfish appear, while the shallower west face is covered in yellow Parazoanthus. Dentex, white bream, sea bass, large groupers and a resident school of barracuda are regular sights, and eagle rays are reported more and more often. Freediver Enzo Maiorca set his last depth record here in 1974.
