Capo di Sorrento
Also known as: Sorrento Cape
The site lies at the edge of the Punta Campanella marine protected area, where a rocky promontory holds the remains of a Roman villa and a natural pool linked to the sea by a channel. Dives can start or end in this pool, lit by the light coming through the channel. Below, the limestone wall falls steeply into the blue, cut by small caves and long cracks with yellow and red gorgonians, sponges, spirographs, tunicates and crinoids. Catshark eggs hang on the gorgonian branches, white bream and young groupers hide in the crevices, and shoals of little tunny pass offshore, a reminder of the old Sorrento tuna fishery. Ceramic religious images have been placed at several depths.
