Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago of 21 islands and islets located about 354 km off the coast of Pernambuco state, Brazil. Roughly 70% of the main island's area is protected as the Fernando de Noronha Marine National Park, created in 1988. In 2001 the archipelago was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its significance to marine life, including tuna, billfish, cetaceans, sharks, and marine turtles. It is known for a resident population of spinner dolphins and nesting hawksbill sea turtles.
