Gemaal Dreischor

The pumping station drains surplus polder water into the salt Grevelingen lake, and the posts and pipes of its outlet start at about five metres. Every part of the structure is covered with sponges, sea squirts, anemones and weed, which makes it a favourite of macro photographers. Small fish, shrimps, crabs and lobsters hide in the growth, and Japanese wireweed grows here each summer before vanishing again around early September. Divers enter over the stones of the dike with the help of a rope and swim parallel to the dike to the outlet. When the pumps run, a dark plume of fresh water spoils the visibility for a while. The lake has no tide, so the site can be dived all day.
