American Shoal

The American Shoal light was the last of the six reef lighthouses built in the Florida Keys to warn ships of the shallow reefs. Around its base the bottom is flat sand and rubble with barracuda and small schools of grunts, snapper and sergeant majors, and seabirds rest on the structure. Away from the light the water deepens considerably, so dive parties can combine snorkelling and reef diving at the same site. The Adolphus Busch Sr. wreck was sunk between American Shoal and Looe Key.
