The Canyons

The canyons are faults that cut across the width of Tiputa Pass. On the incoming current divers drift into the pass and drop into one canyon after another, which gives brief shelter from the flow in the middle of the channel, where it is strongest. Schools of surgeonfish, whitetip sharks, napoleon wrasse and soldierfish hide in the cracks, and manta rays and hammerhead sharks pass along this crossing point. The 6 Passengers notes that in June, the grey reef shark breeding period, hundreds of grey sharks gather in the canyons.
