Avatoru Pass
Also known as: Avatoru
Avatoru Pass is the second channel linking the ocean with the Rangiroa lagoon in the north of the atoll. Near the lagoon a small islet splits it into two channels: the wide left one is of little interest to divers, while the narrow right one is dived as The Little Pass. The pass is less deep than Tiputa, and the current tends to be stronger in the narrow part. Tahiti Tourisme describes it as a site for thrill seekers, with manta rays, grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks and stingrays among schools of reef fish. Dive centres also run dives on the outer reef to the right of the pass (Avatoru Reef) and around the islet in the middle of the pass (Mahuta).
