Point Whitney
The main feature at Point Whitney is the seawater intake pipeline of the state shellfish lab, which runs along shallow flats for about 200 yards before sloping steeply into deeper water. Giant Pacific octopus shelter under the concrete supports, and warbonnets, rockfish and a recovering sea star population live along the pipe. The shallows can have poor visibility but sometimes surprisingly warm water, and Octopus Gardens reports 40 ft visibility in August. Octopus Gardens says the site is not current-sensitive, has easy entry and suits training. Parking needs a Discover Pass, and boats are numerous during fishing and crabbing seasons.
