El Salón de María
Also known as: Maria's Hall
The centrepiece of El Salón de María is a cavern formed by a hole in the reef, with three entrances that divers can use. Its walls are decorated with purple, pink, blue and green sponges and corals, and many tropical fish shelter inside. Around the cavern the reef alternates with sandy patches, and some coral was damaged by Hurricane Ivan. A submerged coral ridge here forms a second wall that drops to about 40 m. The cuba diving guide names it among the sites it suggests at María la Gorda.
