Manta Point
Also known as: Karang Makassar · Kurang Makassar · Manta Point Komodo
Karang Makassar is a reef of long, current-swept ridges that runs for around 2 km, and guides drift along it at roughly 10 to 15 m. Strong tidal flow keeps coral growth sparse, so the bottom looks like a lunar landscape of rubble, craters and dunes with scattered bommies. Manta rays gather here to feed and to be cleaned, and in the right season dozens can be seen at once. Eagle rays, marbled rays, white-tip and blacktip reef sharks and bumphead parrotfish are also seen, and the rubble hides mantis shrimp and blue-ringed octopus. Because it is shallow and comparatively easy, it suits divers of most levels and can also be snorkelled.
