Le Spahis
Also known as: Le Saphis
Built at La Seyne in 1864, the 53 m iron steamer was sailing from Bastia, Livorno and Nice to Marseille with about 20 crew and 80 passengers when she struck the islet; fishermen from Le Lavandou brought survivors ashore, but many people were lost. The bow lies on its side and the rest of the ship is spread down the slope of the islet as a jumble of plates, with the bow still in good condition. The site is sheltered and usually calm, and dive centres use it for first wreck dives and training.
