Sea Lion Rookery

Also known as: The Rookery

The Rookery lies below cliffs where hundreds of California sea lions haul out, and young sea lions reliably swim out to twist and dive-bomb around divers. The bottom is mostly sand with large rocks, depressions and some kelp. Patch reefs around 30 ft hold invertebrates and sometimes bat rays, which gather in numbers at certain times of year. Elephant seals rest on shore nearby and should be given plenty of room. The site is in the Santa Barbara Island marine reserve.
