Cathedral Cove
Cathedral Cove sits on the north side of East Anacapa Island, where the island shelters it from the wind and the water is often calm and clear. The rocky shoreline gives way to a sandy bottom dotted with boulders and kelp, which slopes gently seaward. Because the cove lies inside a marine reserve, the garibaldi, sheephead and other reef fish are unusually unafraid of divers. A sea lion haul-out nearby means curious sea lions often join divers in the kelp, which makes the site popular with wide-angle photographers. Sarcastic fringeheads living in empty shells on the deeper sand are another local speciality.
