SAS Transvaal

Also known as: HMSAS Transvaal

The frigate was launched at Belfast on 2 August 1944 as HMSAS Transvaal and was later sold for scrap and sunk with explosive charges. The wreck stands upright but has partly collapsed. The five Smitswinkel Bay wrecks were sunk on purpose to create an artificial reef and lie close together, so in good visibility several can be seen on one dive. Soft corals, sponges, sea fans, anemones and nudibranchs cover the steel, and a torch brings out their colours. Because of the depth it is a dive for experienced, advanced divers.
