Hugo's Trench

Also known as: Hugos Trench

Hugo's Trench is a narrow chasm between sheer rock walls that runs into Julian Rocks; in perfect conditions it can be swum right through. Its sandy floor is often lined with two species of wobbegong shark and peacock soles, while tailor, jewfish and bream hang in the gap. The walls make it a favourite for macro: nudibranchs, Spanish dancers, mantis shrimp and pineapple fish are regularly found. In winter grey nurse sharks can fill the trenches. The site is sheltered from the strong northerlies common between September and Christmas, but surge inside can be strong, so divers swim out of the trench before ascending.
