El Cien
Also known as: Mario's Reef · Cien Pies
The name refers to its depth of around one hundred feet, where light fades and hard corals become sparse. In exchange, large animals use the reef: big groupers, dog snapper, nurse sharks and bull sharks, with occasional reports of tiger and sand sharks. Schools of tuna and bigeye trevally may pass overhead, and the sandy parts can be covered with large rays. Bottom time is short at this depth and dives can turn out cold and dark, so guides call it a gamble. The park guide lists a north and a south section.
