El Bajo
Also known as: El Bajo de los Meros · El Bajo Reef
The reef forms a narrow ridge of coral and rock, roughly half a mile long, that rises from a sandy bottom and holds a large share of the park's hard coral species. Leopard groupers are abundant, and dive centres point out that a small fraction of them are the golden colour phase. Schools of yellowtail and dog snapper, porkfish and grunts mix with moray eels, while garden eels cover the surrounding sand. In winter stingrays, guitarfish and huge numbers of mobula rays move through, and humpback whales can be heard during dives; whale sharks pass along the reef from time to time. When the current runs, the site is dived as a drift along the bar.
