Secca delle Fumose

Also known as: Smoky Reef

The pillars, built in the Roman opus pilarum technique, may have protected Portus Julius or carried a pier or road. They are now thickly overgrown, and the western part of the site sits on active volcanic ground where fumaroles release streams of gas bubbles and sulphur deposits coat the bottom. Fish swim through the bubbles, and Centro Sub Pozzuoli reports many groupers, large brown meagre, dense schools of white bream, amberjack, damselfish and, more recently, barracuda. Mooring buoys let dive boats visit without anchoring.
