Secca delle Formiche di Vivara
Also known as: Secca delle Formiche · Formiche Reef · Formiche di Vivara · Secca delle Formiche II
Pinnacles rise suddenly to about 4 m midway between Vivara and the Aragonese castle of Ischia. Currents have eroded the rock into canyons, natural arches, swim-throughs and caves, including a large chamber lit by a chimney, so the full shoal is usually split into two dives. Yellow gorgonians and Parazoanthus coat the walls, and slipper lobsters climb to shallow depths in summer to breed. Pipefish hide in the Posidonia on the sandy paths, nudibranchs are plentiful, and amberjack, dentex, groupers, octopus and conger eels are frequent.
