Ninfeo di Claudio
Also known as: Sunken Nymphaeum of Claudius · Submerged Nymphaeum · Claudio's Nymphaeum · Ninfeo dell'imperatore Claudio
This rectangular hall with an apse and side niches was found during excavations in 1970 and once imitated a sea grotto where guests of Claudius dined among water features. Copies of the statues, including Ulysses and Baios from the scene of the drunken Cyclops and members of the emperor's family, stand in place, while the originals are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Baia. The route continues past a bath complex with a polychrome marble floor to the paved Via Herculanea, which once led towards Portus Julius. The site is shallow enough for snorkellers and first-time divers.
