Shane's Reef

Also known as: Shanes Reef · Nungwi Reef

Shane's Reef is a patchwork of coral and sandy bottom close to Nungwi that dive centres rate as one of the best macro sites in Zanzibar. Photographers come for frogfish, seahorses, mantis shrimps, leaf and weedy scorpionfish, Mauritius scorpionfish and flying gurnards. Octopus, cuttlefish and crocodilefish are common, and at night guitarfish and Spanish dancers appear. Most of the interest lies between 10 and 16 m, with a deeper part sloping towards 30 m. TGI notes that the corals themselves are not in good condition; the attraction is the critter life.
