Eagle Shoal

Also known as: Eagle Shoals

Eagle Shoal lies off the southeast end of St. John near Coral Bay, between Ram Head and Leduck Island, and needs a long boat ride. The shoal is a maze of coral fingers, canyons, arches and swim-throughs, and at its heart is The Cathedral, a large chamber where divers kneel on sand while light pours in through an opening in the roof. Orange cup corals, bright sponges and hanging tube sponges cover the walls, and silversides often fill the chamber. Lobsters and nurse sharks shelter under ledges, while porkfish, schoolmasters, Nassau groupers, black durgons, spotted drums and queen and French angelfish are also reported. The site is exposed to the open sea on all sides and can only be dived when the surface is calm, and underwater weddings are held in its caves.
