Carval Rock

Also known as: Carvel Rock

Carval Rock is a chain of rocks that rises above the surface just east of Congo Cay, and seabirds such as terns nest on it. Scuba Diving magazine calls it the only true wall dive in the Virgin Islands outside St. Croix, with a near vertical north face down to about 80 feet. Dives usually start from the mooring on the sheltered south side, where sponges and gorgonians grow on the slope, then cross a shallow passage called The Cut and continue around the rock through a canyon with almost vertical walls. Big schools of silversides draw tarpon and other open-water hunters, and nurse sharks, turtles, eels, lobsters, reef squid and octopus are also reported. The current is the main hazard, so operators and guides rate it for experienced divers.
