Swami Rock

Also known as: Swami Point · Three Swami Rock

The site lies at the north-eastern tip of the Fort Frederick promontory, directly under the cliff that carries the Koneswaram temple, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Sri Lanka. What sets it apart are the coral-covered statues of Hindu deities, among them Shiva and Ganesh, that rest on the rock face. Sri Lanka Diving Tours links some of these figures to a temple set built below the rock for the underwater scenes of the 1962 film Ranmuthu Duwa. The wall and boulders host schools of snapper and fusiliers, moray eels, sea fans and soft corals, and hawksbill turtles are seen on most dives. It is a short boat ride from the Uppuveli and Sandy Cove dive centres and is also offered as a night dive.
