Navy Underwater Museum

Also known as: Navy Museum · Underwater Museum · Navy Underwater Dive Museum and Wreck

In October 2020 the Sri Lanka Navy sank two Shanghai-class fast gunboats of its third Fast Gun Boat Squadron, SLNS Weeraya and SLNS Jagatha, to create a dive site and fish breeding ground in Trincomalee. The hulls lie only 10 to 20 m apart and are encrusted with corals and algae, with small openings that let divers peek inside. Around them the navy placed figures and military equipment, which now give corals and fish a foothold. Groupers, batfish, snappers and wrasse live on the wrecks, scorpionfish and stonefish perch on the structures, and moray eels hide in the cannon barrels. Nilaveli centres often pair it with Navy Island on the same trip.
