Navy Island
Navy Island is a rock that breaks the surface close to Trincomalee town, next to a restricted Sri Lanka Navy area. Its rocky walls hide a small L-shaped cave, described by PADI contributors as an igloo-like cave, which leads up towards the surface and gives beginners a first taste of an overhead space. The sandy bottom at around 12 m and the light current make it a favourite for Discover Scuba, Open Water and Advanced courses as well as night dives. Divers meet green turtles, moray eels, garden eels, mantis shrimp, lobsters and shoals of blue-striped snapper among table corals. Nilaveli centres usually combine it with the nearby Navy Underwater Museum.
