Wye Reef

Also known as: Rye Reef

Wye Reef forms one edge of Buck Island Cove south of St. Thomas. Its name recalls the Wye, which sank on the reef in the hurricane of 1867 that also claimed the RMS Rhone; no wreckage of her remains. The reef descends in terraces of coral-covered boulders and large barrel sponges, so it can be dived shallow or deeper. Nurse sharks, turtles, octopus and schooling fish are regulars, and garden eels live in the sand flats.
