Arches and Tunnels
Also known as: Tunnels of Thatch Cay · Tunnels of Thatch · Arches & Tunnels · Alice in Wonderland
On the north side of Thatch Cay a series of black rock arches and tunnels runs straight through the island, which sources link to the volcanic origin of the Virgin Islands. Divers wind through the passages past boulders, cup corals, sponges and gorgonians, then explore a boulder-strewn slope outside. Tarpon hunt schools of silversides in the tunnels, and butterflyfish, parrotfish, trumpetfish, morays and spiny lobsters live on the reef. Swell pushing through a crack in the rock produces a regular rumbling that has been likened to a sea monster snoring. Because of surge the site is only safe in flat calm conditions.
