Sand River
Unlike a lagoon channel, this sandy feature does not start at a stream or pass on the island but simply runs out over the reef towards the drop-off. Around 25 m overhangs and coral heads line it, and whitetip reef sharks are frequently found resting inside. Divers can hang over the sand in near weightlessness, swim out into the blue or cross to a ridge on the far side of the channel. Napoleon wrasse turn up from time to time, and in season large schools of bluefin trevally hunt juvenile surgeonfish on the reef. A gentler site called The Gap is reached from the same mooring.
