Avaavaroa Passage

The current that makes the passage demanding also brings the fish life, and sharks and turtles are often seen holding position in the flow. From April to mid-August it is one of the few places where grey reef sharks appear, sometimes in large numbers, when the current runs strong. A resident school of eagle rays that can exceed 40 animals lives here, and moray eels are common. Dive Rarotonga only takes experienced divers here and only when conditions allow, as the southern passages can be dangerous.
