Edna's Anchor
Also known as: Ednas Anchor
The site lies in front of Trader Jacks, just outside the passage into Avarua, and takes its name from the schooner Edna, which sank at Atiu. Its anchor rests between two large bommies at about 22 to 24 m, with the chain still lying over the coral, and two further anchors from the whaling era are said to lie here too. Divers follow the edge between sand and reef while the sand tilts ever more steeply towards the drop-off. On the reef side the bottom ends abruptly near 30 m and plunges far deeper, so qualified divers can look into the blue while newer divers stay on the gentler slope. Hard corals such as Porites and Montipora dominate between about 15 and 22 m.
