Mataora Wreck

Also known as: MV Mataora · Miss Mataora

The Mataora was a cargo vessel of about 45 m and roughly 300 tonnes that had been registered in Tonga and supplied the outer islands. Dive Rarotonga reports that she was bought for one dollar on 11 December 1990 and sent to the bottom a few days later to give divers a wreck. Repeated cyclones have broken her apart, but bow and stern can still be recognised. The wreck is a reliable place for lionfish, including clearfin and spotfin species, and the coral terrain around it has some of the finest hard coral formations on Rarotonga. A good dive combines the wreck with the surrounding reef.
