Maritime Reefer

Also known as: FV Maritime Reefer · Maritime Reefer wreck

Dive Rarotonga sank the Maritime Reefer in 1981, making it the first ship scuttled off Rarotonga to create a dive site. Cyclones have since split it into two main sections, although its depth has protected it better than the shallower Mataora. The stern, rudder and propeller are still easy to make out, while the bow is harder to recognise. A resident giant moray and plenty of lionfish live in the wreck, and the odd shark passes by. The surrounding reef is rich, which makes the site popular with photographers.
