Middle Reef
Also known as: Mid Reef
The inside of Molokini is shaped like a bowl, and Middle Reef fills its deeper, well-protected centre. Sheltered from heavy seas by the crescent of the island, it has grown into a large field of living hard coral that divers can swim over for long distances. Ed Robinson's Diving Adventures notes that many of the rarer butterflyfish species are common here, and the PADI blog author names raccoon and pyramid butterflyfish, flame angelfish and fire goby among the highlights. Moorish idols, trumpetfish and passing giant trevally are also reported. Visibility inside the crater is often very high, with 40 m and more reported.
