Matateteiko
Also known as: Matateteiko Point · Pointe Matateteiko
Matateteiko lies at the south-western point of Nuku Hiva and is reached after a boat ride of about 35 minutes. A rocky tongue opens into a wide plateau broken by walls and cracks, and an underwater cave gives the dive a second focus. Tuna, barracuda, jacks and fusiliers move past in schools, while unicornfish, crustaceans and shells are found closer to the rock. Rays and sharks are frequent, blacktip sharks among them, and hammerheads and mantas turn up on lucky days. The operator warns of often strong current and of exposure to southern swell and wind, recommends the period from September to March and asks for PE40 or experienced Advanced Open Water divers.
