Tikapo

Also known as: Rocher Tikapo · Cap Tikapo · Pointe Tikapo

Tikapo is a shoal that climbs from the deep and breaks the surface in open ocean off a headland of the south coast of Nuku Hiva. Its stepped profile ends in a ledge at about 25 m that overhangs the blue, a good place to watch eagle rays and sometimes manta rays pass. Divers circle the rock among large schools of trevallies, unicornfish, fusiliers, triggerfish and barracuda, while tuna, bonitos and sharks hunt around it. The site is open to swell and wind from the south, entries are negative and the current is often strong. Operators reserve it for experienced divers, and Nuku Dive names October to March as the best time.
