Hin Muang
Also known as: Purple Rock
Hin Muang means Purple Rock, after the dense purple, lilac and red soft corals that carpet its ridges and ledges. The reef is a long ridge whose shallowest part sits in the west at about 8 to 12 m and which deepens steadily to the east before breaking into smaller pinnacles and plateaus. Its sheer walls are often called the highest submerged vertical wall in Thailand and reach far below recreational limits. Manta rays use the row of pinnacles along the top, whale sharks pass along the outer side, and grey reef sharks, barracuda and trevally patrol the deeper sections. Sea fans, black corals and harlequin shrimp make it rewarding for macro photographers as well. The site is exposed and deep, so dive centres take only experienced divers.
