El Arco
Also known as: The Arch
The route passes through two stone arches: the first and larger one reaches from about 1 m to 8 m in height, the second is smaller and deeper and marks the turning point. The arch walls are covered with sponges, false coral, algae and sea squirts, and a ledge at the base of the first arch shelters brown meagre, red mullet, octopus, groupers and moray eels. A curved wall leads over sand to a small Posidonia meadow tucked between large rocks. Schools of barracuda are seen at times, and Vellmari reports having filmed a rare crested oarfish here. Because the start is so shallow the site is also popular with snorkellers.
