La Plataforma (Espardell)

La Plataforma was once a floating fish farm used to raise sea bream and sea bass; once maintenance stopped it gradually broke down and sank. The giant hexagonal frame now lies at an angle, one side on the sand and the other held up by the old floating pillars, which gives the site an unusual, almost science-fiction look. Its metal beams act as an artificial reef and attract scorpionfish, moray and conger eels, slipper lobsters and many crustaceans. The signature sight is the large school of barracuda that hangs calmly around the structure for most of the dive. Amberjacks also patrol the area, and one centre reports frequent encounters with schools of them in May.
