Karang Hatta
Also known as: Sekaru · Skaru · Skaru Reef
Karang Hatta is a submerged reef about 500 m wide off the south coast of Hatta, the Banda site closest to the deep Banda Trench. Its south-eastern corner usually catches a southerly current that pulls in fish by the thousands, above all endless streams of fusiliers and redtooth triggerfish. Dogtooth tuna, eagle rays, great barracuda, bigeye trevally, mobula rays and turtles can be seen, and hammerhead sharks turn up at times. On the western side the slope becomes a wall with very large sponges and soldierfish under the overhangs. The reef flats were damaged by blast fishing years ago but are recovering well.
