The Perhentian Islands are a small archipelago off Terengganu, Malaysia, known for calm, clear waters and coral reefs that make them a popular diving and snorkelling destination outside the monsoon season.
The Perhentian Islands lie off the coast of Besut District, Terengganu, in the South China Sea, and comprise nine islands, the two largest being Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil. Perhentian Besar, Perhentian Kecil and Susu Dara Besar are gazetted as marine parks, with protection extending two nautical miles from shore. Dozens of dive sites are found around both main islands, with recorded marine life including sea turtles, reef fish, blue-spotted rays and blacktip reef sharks. During the November-February monsoon season most tourist services close and the islands are largely inaccessible.
