The Gaiola underwater park lies between the cliffs of Trentaremi bay and the slopes of Marechiaro on the Posillipo coast. Around the islet, the sunken fishponds, pillars and walls of the Roman villa of Pausilypon, which slid below sea level through bradyseism, are now encrusted with algae, Cladocora coral and Parazoanthus. Damselfish, rainbow wrasse, red mullet, bream and octopus live among the stone blocks, and white and yellow gorgonians begin at about 6 m. Centro Sub Pozzuoli has seen small sprigs of red coral at only 10 m on an outer rock. The CSI Gaiola, based at the park, runs guided biological and archaeological dives for certified divers.
