Carysfort Reef
Carysfort Reef is named after HMS Carysfort, which ran aground here in 1770, and its 1852 lighthouse is the oldest functioning one of its type in the United States. NOAA describes an unusual double reef: shallow corals near the lighthouse and a broad elkhorn stand at Carysfort South, with massive star corals, gullies and occasional swim-through tunnels further offshore. East-north-east of the tower, Carysfort Trench or Carysfort Wall drops to a sandy bottom at about 65 to 80 feet. Cannons from the 1800s lie in shallow water north of the tower and two large anchors rest nearby. NOAA counts it among the most remote reefs of the Upper Keys.
