Manta Ray Bay

Also known as: Mantaray Bay · The Aquarium

Manta Ray Bay sits on the north-eastern tip of Hook Island and is often named as the most famous site of the island group. The terrain is a maze of coral bommies with valleys, caves and swim-throughs, and a steep slope leads into deeper water beyond the bommies. A large resident Maori wrasse called George is the local celebrity, together with giant trevally and big schools of batfish. Manta rays turn up mainly in the cooler months from May to September. Two manta ray sculptures of the Ngaro Underwater Marine Sculpture Trail stand in the bay. Anchoring is not allowed, so boats use the public moorings.
