Cockatoo Point

Also known as: Cocktail Point

Cockatoo Point marks the northern edge of Stonehaven Bay on Hook Island and is praised for having some of the best coral in the Whitsundays at present. A shallow shelf covered in soft corals such as mushroom and elephant ear corals suits snorkellers, while divers follow a gradual drop-off to larger hard coral structures of staghorn, plate and boulder corals. Green and hawksbill turtles and rays are seen here, together with plenty of small grazing reef fish. The current depends on the tide and can range from weak to strong, and Visit Airlie Beach recommends drift snorkelling with the current along the reef edge. A single public mooring serves the site.
