Ilhéu de Vila Franca
Also known as: Ilheu De Vila Franca Do Campo · Ilehu De Vila Franca Do Campo
The islet is what remains above water of a small volcano that emerged over four millennia ago, and its old crater now holds a large sheltered bay. Divers follow the big cracks and canyons around it, and the route can be chosen according to the direction of the swell. Because the area is a nature reserve, fish are plentiful: Azores chromis, ornate wrasse, blacktail comber, parrotfish, moray eels, octopus and dusky groupers are common. Stingrays rest on the sand while trevally, yellowmouth barracuda and almaco jacks pass in open water. Deeper on the outer walls of the volcano, experienced divers find black coral.
